    The Origin

Our work goes beyond developing interfaces and translating decades of history into contemporary experiences that unite tradition and innovation. It is about allowing every smartwatch to carry a touch of the personality and elegance of the great timepieces that have defined generations.

    Creative process

More than analyzing watches, we seek to understand the ecosystem that surrounds them.

When Measuring Time Meant Organizing Society

    Outside the Box

It is the visual details, the way a watch sits on the wrist, and the identity it conveys that transform an electronic device into an object of meaning.

    True AOD

The hands disappear. The indices vanish. The richness of the dial is replaced by a few numbers on an almost empty screen.

Always On.
Always a Watch

Few users notice it during their first week of use. But spend enough time with a smartwatch and a curious change becomes impossible to ignore: the watch disappears when it goes to sleep.

The hands cease to exist. The markers disappear. The richness of the dial is replaced by a few numbers on an almost empty screen. The device continues to function perfectly, but the visual presence that has always defined a watch seems to disappear with it.

Stock Watchface with AOD On

A very simple look, far removed from that of a traditional watch. The watchface components are drastically reduced, leaving only a few elements visible on the screen.

Impressive clarity of detail across the dial and complications. Continuous movement of the seconds hand on almost all Smartface models.

From total darkness to life

A maioria das pessoas simplesmente se acostuma. Afinal, foi assim que os smartwatches passaram a funcionar. Mas essa solução levanta uma pergunta interessante: por que um relógio moderno precisa parecer menos relógio justamente quando permanece no pulso?

Centuries of continuity

Ever since the first portable watches began accompanying people between the 15th and 16th centuries, one characteristic has remained virtually unchanged: the dial never ceased to exist. Whether the movement was mechanical, automatic, quartz, or electronic, a single glance was enough to reveal the watch’s entire identity. Hands, markers, scales, textures, and

proportions remained exactly where the designer intended them to be. This visual continuity helped build a language recognized around the world. A pilot watch, a chronograph, a dive watch, or a dress watch could be identified from a distance not only by its functions, but by its design as a whole. A watch did not need to be activated to be a watch.

The challenge brought
by technology

The arrival of digital screens changed this logic. The first smartwatches introduced capabilities that traditional watchmaking could never have imagined, including health sensors, GPS, notifications, maps, payments, sports tracking, and dozens of other features. At the same time, they introduced a limitation conventional watches never had: battery life. Every illuminated pixel began consuming energy, and every screen update had a small impact on how long a charge would last. A balance had to be found.

The Overlooked Impact

In a meeting, over lunch, or while driving, a quick glance at the wrist is enough to reveal the difference between a traditional watch and a typical smartwatch. The former continues to communicate its identity; the latter often appears to be turned off.

This is a disruption that goes beyond aesthetics. It changes the very experience watchmaking has built over hundreds of years: that of an object that is always present, always legible, and always recognizable.

The Birth of the AOD
aways-on-display

It was in this context that the Always-On Display, known as AOD, emerged. The concept was simple: keep only essential information visible while most of the screen remained in a low-power state. The solution addressed an important battery-life challenge, but created another—one that received far less attention. In practice, many smartwatches began hiding the very elements that made their watch faces interesting. When AOD was activated, hands disappeared, scales were removed, complications were no longer displayed, and the visual composition gave way to an extremely simplified layout.

Design Also Preserves History

At ORMAN, every Smartface is born from the interpretation of a legacy built over centuries. We study the proportions, typography, scales, finishes, and visual elements that gave rise to the most iconic styles in watchmaking. The goal has never been to reproduce an existing watch, but to understand the logic behind its design and translate it into the world of smart devices.

FULL AOD is part of that same philosophy. If the smartwatch has already evolved in processing power, connectivity, and health monitoring, we believe it can also evolve in the way it respects the visual language that has made the watch one of the most enduring objects in the history of design.

The FULL AOD Concept

At ORMAN Watch, we believe technological evolution does not have to mean abandoning this visual heritage. This idea gave rise to the concept of the FULL Always-On Display.

Our Smartfaces are designed to preserve the identity of the dial while in Always-On mode. Instead of reducing the watch to a minimal representation, we aim to maintain its composition, proportions, and visual personality, while respecting the technical characteristics of each platform and the power-consumption limits defined by manufacturers.

On many compatible models, even the continuous movement of the seconds hand remains active, bringing the experience even closer to the behavior expected from a traditional watch.

This is not about keeping more pixels illuminated simply for aesthetic reasons. It is about preserving design continuity—a principle that has been part of watchmaking since long before the digital age.

When Technology Respects Time

Every generation of watches has embraced new solutions without completely abandoning its identity. Steel replaced other materials, quartz transformed precision, and electronics expanded what a watch could do. Yet the watch remained recognizable. Smartwatches represent another chapter in this evolution, not a break from it.

Technology changes. The way we relate to time remains the same. And a watch that stays present, even when no one touches the screen, preserves a quality that has endured for centuries: always being ready to accompany every moment.

For more than five centuries, a watch has always remained visually present. ORMAN believes smartwatches should preserve that continuity as well.
